Are You Using Your EHR System Effectively in Your Group Practice?

Are You Using Your EHR System Effectively in Your Group Practice?

Are you using an EHR system for your group practice? If not… Stop. Right. Now. And sign up for one. There are so many EHRs out there right now. You can check this out to learn about the most popular ones and their features.

EHR systems have been receiving a lot of attention lately, as they all compete for the attention of practice owners by way of updates and improvements. Putting aside practice management systems by name, it’s important to know what you need it to do for your practice and if you are using your practice management system to its fullest. When I started using my EHR system in all ways available to me (that help my practice) I noticed a major shift in extra time for my biller, reduced mistakes, reduced time between sessions and insurance reimbursement, and lower client balances.

Let’s take a look at your group practice.

  1. Do you have multiple clinicians in which billing is done through one EHR account?
  2. Do you take insurance for which you need to send claims?
  3. Do you need a space for which you see who your clinicians see and when they receive payments in order to do payroll?
  4. Do your clients like to schedule appointments online?
  5. Do you want your clients to be able to pay bills and see their balances online?

I often see group practices using several systems, to run their group practices. For example, using Office Ally for sending insurance claims, Stripe for credit card payments, Google Calendar for scheduling, a spreadsheet for keeping track of who clinicians see in order to pay them, and Quickbooks for accounting. Thats a LOT of systems to use and track (let alone the likelihood of making mistakes with all the manual entering of information). EHR systems these days offer all of this in one system, and taking the plunge of switching to an EHR instead of using several pieces of software, although stressful to transfer data, is definitely going to help save you time and money in the long run.

I have compiled a checklist for group practice owners to use when deciding on an EHR and figuring out what they need from their EHR. Download it below.
